TOMORROW THE GOP DECIDES: WERE WE ROBBED?
Contrary to popular belief, embattled rookie chairman Rob Ortiz is a hardworking, energetic, and driven chairman. Those who have come out and accused the poor chairman of "doing nothing" need to examine the facts a little closer.
Rob used BCRO funds to organize phone banks for Rudy.
Rob Ortiz put together the Lincoln Day dinner and the Trump golf outing. Hell, he even tried to get McCain out on the links, but that's another story for another day.
After the party's grassroots told Rob they wanted to support Jersey Joe, Ortiz went out and recruited Andy Unanue to run for US Senate. He flawlessly executed Tom Wilson's if-you-can't-raise-money-run-a-rich-guy strategy to a tee.
He's dabbled in non-partisan races, particularly Ridgewood's, where the BCRO bankrolled some robo-calls (We're curious to see IF it even ends up on an ELEC filing).
He even showed off his political savvy and coalition building skills when he recruited Ben Focarino to run in last Tuesday's chairman race in an attempt to split the "anti" vote.
So as you can see Ortiz has been quite the busy beaver when it comes to doing things for Rob Ortiz. If your name is not Rob Ortiz, or you are not an Ortiz crony, good luck getting the chairman to do anything for you.
One would have an easier time finding a virgin in a whorehouse than they would finding Ortiz at a Republican event in Bergen that he did not personally organize. We're not entirely sure where Rob has been spending his time, we can only speculate.
Was he out wining and dining Democratic lawmakers? Ortiz is employed at the lobbying firm of Porzio Bromberg & Newman Pc, who have donated almost $40,000 to the state Democrat Party over the past few years.
Maybe he was spending some quality time with Matt Mowers. We're not sure where Matt's been either and who knows, maybe him and Ortiz hang out together. What we do know is that the GOP Freeholder candidates missed an important interview with the Bergen Education Association due to Mowers inability to open the mail and pass the relevant information on the candidates. Come to think of it, Matt isn't all that great at answering the phone either. Try calling the BCRO during normal working hours if you don't believe us. Soon you too will have their voicemail greeting memorized.
While it's tempting to beat Mowers up for his complete and utter inability to perform the two basic functions of executive director (answer the phone and open the mail), can you really blame a naïve, ambitious young kid who is just trying to get ahead? It's awfully hard to when he clearly was set up for failure by Ortiz.
18-year-olds have their place in the world. In the Army they are called privates, in college they are freshman, and in the working world they are known as apprentices. They're not typically responsible for day to day operations of a county political party in a county with more people in it than four US states. Ortiz's hiring of Mowers was a boneheaded idea, and the predatory nature of that hiring is shameful to say the least.
Maybe Rob's been on the phone with his attorney. Gerry Cardinale and Patti DiCostanzo are threatening to sue Ortiz because he wants to open the chairmanship re-vote to the entire county committee, not just those who came out to vote the first time around. Ortiz says he wants to be "inclusive" and that he wants to "let everybody have a voice." Naturally this line of reasoning trumps the pre-agreed upon party rules, just ask any Hillary Clinton supporter.
We know he hasn't been at the printer getting literature and signs made up for the Freeholder candidates. Hell, the BCRO hasn't really done anything for it's county-wide candidates. No seed money, no literature, no signs, no passing on of correspondence, zip, zero, nada, zilch.
Maybe he's been working on his RINO farm out in the fertile fields of Rutherford. Ex-Democrat John Hipp has turned out to be quite ineffective, incompetent, and autocratic in true RINO fashion. There are high hopes that the latest crop of RINO's to emerge from Ortiz's farm, Frank Wilson and Joseph DeSalvo Jr., will exceed Hipp in their level of inability and incompetence. DeSalvo's only been a member of team GOP for a month or two, so hopes are especially high for him.
Could Ortiz be in Palisades Park? His crony Tommy Toscano's been attempting to pack the town's vacant county committee seats with Democrats. Who knows, maybe he needed a hand.
Wherever Rob Ortiz has been spending his time, it certainly hasn't been with his membership. His inability to secure a +50% majority is proof that there are only so many big donors and lawyers on county committee, the only demographic that is of any interest to Ortiz.
Will the Bergen GOP get back on track and capitalize on a severely weakened and hamstrung Democrat Party or will it continue to operate as the official "Rob Ortiz Glorification Club ?" We're not quite sure, but we don't see many supporters of conservative Ben Focarino casting votes for Rob Ortiz, poster child of Bergen's My Party Too crowd.
